The thoughts behind this spread
This spread didn’t TURN out like this in one go. No no no. It was several, ok more then several attempts. I wanted to some how show how Corita played with her materials to create something new. During the process of making this book when I needed help to get in the Corita Plork mode, I would open her book Learning by Heart as a source of inspiration. One chapter where she gives the assignment to make a toy, got me thinking. What if the bird had some kind of making toy? Something that could spin and when it did would TURN…into something new.
This spin wheel made me think of one of Corita’s prints, Turn. And not sure I remember the order of how it went but at some point I thought, the bird needs to be singing, that song, which is printed on the pinwheel, the one that goes,
“To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven….”
So I drew the bird singing.
But it wasn’t until the spread was almost done that I had a major tickle aha moment.
Who sings that song?……………
Well the band the Byrds of course!
